A Konkan Coast garden does not maintain itself — but with the right actions at the right times of year, it stays beautiful with surprisingly manageable effort. This month-by-month checklist is what we use when managing maintenance contracts for Alibag and Raigad villas.
January & February — Peak Season, Peak Presentation
These are the most visited months for most Alibag villas. The garden should look its absolute best.
- Deadhead Marigolds, Petunias and Zinnias twice a week to extend flowering
- Apply a 10:10:10 NPK granular fertiliser to lawn and flowering beds
- Prune any overgrown hedges to maintain clean form — this is the best time for formal shaping
- Check drip irrigation emitters for blockages; flush the main line
- Stake any tall plants before the wind picks up in February
- Apply a light mulch layer (3–5 cm) to planting beds to retain soil moisture as temperatures rise
March & April — Pre-Monsoon Preparation
Temperatures climb steeply. Cool-season annuals are spent; the garden transitions to heat-tolerant species.
- Remove cool-season annuals (Petunias, Stock, Marigolds) as they finish
- Plant heat-tolerant annuals: Portulaca, Vinca, Torenia for continuous colour
- Prune Bougainvillea hard (April) — this triggers the monsoon flush of new growth and bracts
- Service the irrigation controller and check all zone valves before the monsoon
- Apply a pre-monsoon fertiliser high in potassium to strengthen plant cell walls against fungal disease
- Clear drainage channels, gutters and downpipes before the first rain
- Inspect retaining walls and edging for any movement or erosion after last year's rains
May — Pre-Monsoon Final Check
- Apply a contact fungicide to roses, lawn and susceptible plants before humidity peaks
- Stake all tall perennials that will face monsoon wind loads
- Divide and replant any crowded perennials before the monsoon growth flush
- Check pool deck drainage — ensure no water will pool against the building in heavy rain
- Complete any planned hard landscaping projects (paving, edging, pergola work) before June
"The two months before the monsoon and the two weeks after it ends are the most important maintenance windows of the year for an Alibag garden."
June, July & August — Monsoon Management
Reduce irrigation to near zero — rainfall exceeds plant requirements. Focus shifts to pest and disease management and structural maintenance.
- Switch off automatic irrigation or reduce to once per week maximum
- Apply a systemic fungicide monthly — high humidity promotes powdery mildew, anthracnose and leaf spot
- Monitor for mealy bug, which thrives in wet conditions — treat on sight with a neem oil spray
- Clear fallen branches and debris after each heavy rainfall event
- Check roof terrace drain outlets weekly to prevent waterlogging
- Allow lawn to grow slightly longer than usual — close mowing in monsoon promotes fungal disease
- Plant Heliconia, Ginger Lily and Turmeric divisions if you wish to expand these clumps — monsoon establishment is rapid
September — Post-Monsoon Transition
- Begin reducing fungicide frequency as humidity drops
- Resume full irrigation schedule and fertiliser programme
- Plant Dahlia tubers for October–November bloom
- Prune any dead or diseased wood that developed during the monsoon
- Re-edge garden beds and reapply mulch where it has washed away
- Inspect irrigation system for any damage caused by soil movement or foot traffic during monsoon
October & November — Post-Monsoon Flush
The most beautiful period in an Alibag garden. Growth is rapid, colours are vivid, and the air is clear.
- Plant cool-season annual seedlings: Chrysanthemum, Petunia, Marigold, Zinnia
- Give Bougainvillea its post-monsoon feed (low nitrogen, high phosphorus) to encourage blooming
- Apply slow-release fertiliser to all trees and perennials for the season ahead
- Service pool filtration and pool deck — power wash algae from paving
- Photograph the garden — the post-monsoon lushness is the best record of what the planting has achieved
December — Cool Season Establishment
- Annual beds should be in full flower for the Christmas and New Year villa visits
- Trim formal hedges for the last time before the dry season slows growth
- Check Christmas lighting if installed — ensure all fittings are weatherproof
- Apply a deep watering to specimen trees before the dry season reduces soil moisture
- Review and plan any changes or new planting for the coming year with your landscape designer
